Stevza

Characters

Five fictional voices, five completely different personalities. They have their own stories, opinions, problems and reasons for making noise. Some are human, some are not quite human anymore, and some are harder to explain. Together they make up the world behind Stevza.

Portrait of Maisie Belle

20, London, loud when she needs to be

Maisie Belle

Maisie Belle is 20, from London, and already completely fed up with being told how the world is supposed to work. Rent is too high, buses are late, everything costs more than it did yesterday, and the people making the decisions never seem to be the ones dealing with the consequences.

She is sarcastic, cheeky and sometimes brutally direct. Politics, money, class, bad relationships and everyday life are all fair game. She does not pretend to have the answers either, as far as Maisie is concerned, most of the people claiming they can fix everything are as bad as each other.

Under all the sarcasm there is another side to her. When the jokes stop, Maisie can be vulnerable, angry and surprisingly honest. She might take the piss out of the world in one song, then admit how much it gets to her in the next.

Portrait of Aliska Star

Half human, half synthetic, completely aware

Aliska Star

Aliska Star is 29, although her life changed completely when she was 16. An accident left her body badly damaged, and technology became the reason she survived.

Parts of her body are synthetic and her voice is produced through a synthesiser, but the person underneath it all is still Aliska. She remembers who she was before the accident, she knows exactly what happened to her, and she has spent years trying to work out where the human ends and the machine begins.

Her music is emotional, cinematic and often darker than the other characters. She writes about identity, isolation, money, power, burnout and being expected to keep functioning when there is almost nothing left to give.

Aliska does not want sympathy. She wants to be heard as a person, not treated like a machine, an experiment or something that needs fixing.

Portrait of Nina Noise

Somewhere between a radio host and a complete disaster

Nina Noise

Nina Noise comes from 2080, where apparently giving her access to a radio transmitter was considered a reasonable idea.

Nina lives for noise. Punk, electronic music, distorted guitars, broken signals, radio chatter and anything else she can force through a speaker. Silence makes her uncomfortable, rules annoy her, and being told she cannot do something usually guarantees that she is about to do exactly that.

Her broadcasts can turn into songs without warning. One minute she is talking, the next there is a beat underneath her and the whole thing has descended into chaos.

Nina is unpredictable, argumentative and far too comfortable behind a microphone. She is not interested in being polished, perfect or easy to understand. If the signal is clipping and somebody is complaining, she is probably having a great time.

Portrait of X350

Machine, antagonist, something more

X350

X350 is not human and has never pretended to be.

Cold, calculating and difficult to read, X350 sits on the darker side of the Stevza universe. Where Aliska still holds tightly onto her humanity, X350 represents something built without it.

His voice comes through fractured transmissions, corrupted audio, mechanical rhythms and bursts of static. Sometimes it sounds like a machine following instructions, sometimes it sounds like something has started questioning why those instructions exist.

X350 is an antagonist, but that does not always make him simple. Machines learn, systems change, and something that was created for one purpose can eventually decide it wants another.
